https://www.incrediblenortheastindia.com/ Assam, Night View of Sivasagar. Sivasagar, also known as Sibsagar, is a historic town located in the northeastern state of Assam, India. It holds great significance in the history of Assam and is known for its rich cultural and architectural heritage. Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom, a powerful kingdom that ruled over Assam for several centuries (from the 13th century until the early 19th century). The Ahom dynasty had a profound impact on the cultural, political, and social landscape of Assam. The town is famous for its impressive historical monuments, most notably the Sivasagar Sivadol (also known as the Sivasagar Siva Temple), which is one of the tallest Shiva temples in India. It was built by Queen Ambika, the queen of Ahom King Siva Singha, in 1734. Apart from the Sivadol, Sivasagar boasts other significant structures like the Joy Dol (a Vishnu temple), Devidol, Vishnudol, and several ancient tanks and palaces. This is another remarkable historical structure in Sivasagar. It is an amphitheater built by Ahom King Pramatta Singha in the 18th century. It is considered one of the oldest surviving amphitheaters in Asia. Apart from the historical sites, Sivasagar and its surroundings offer natural beauty, including Dikhow River, Gaurisagar Tank, and Gargaon Palace. Sivasagar is a place of immense historical and cultural importance, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in exploring the cultural heritage of Assam.
