The Syiem, the esteemed leader of the Khasi state, alongside the revered ka Syiem Sad (head priestess), takes on the role of conducting the rituals, ensuring the sanctity of the ceremonies, and involving the community.
Much like other festivals in Meghalaya, the Nongkrem Dance Festival serves as a tribute to the mighty Goddess Ka Blei Synshar, seeking her blessings for abundant harvests and prosperity. The Syiem of Khyrim, in conjunction with the high priest, leads the Pomblang ceremony. Visitors from far and wide, both from within the country and beyond, gather to partake in the festivities. The celebration features young women captivating the audience with the graceful Shad Kynthei dance, while men encircle them in the Shad Mystieh, symbolizing their role as protectors and embodiments of male strength.
